Abstract

The paper discusses the notions of ‘media literacy’ and ‘mediatization’, as explained by Professor Thomas Bauer, from the University of Vienna, in his keynote address ‘Beyond and after Media Literacy: media competence building civil society’ delivered at Graduate Program of Casper Libero. This paper discusses some of Bauer’s main arguments, addressing particularly the need of having media skills to live in a mediatized society. These skills may only be acquired by the recognition of the modus operandi of the media in a symbolically mediated social space – the ‘media literacy’ as Prof. Bauer understands it.
